The History of the WI
Our meeting celebrating our fantastic foresisters kicked off with member, Sarah, showing us a FAB informational wartime video,Countrywomen, straight from the archives of the British Film Institute. Within it, we learned about all of the fantastic initiatives the WI supported during WWII including housing evacuees and of course, making our infamous preserves to keep our country fed during times when food was less available.
Our second speaker and founding president, Holly, stepped up to share her passion for Jane Robinson’s book, A Force to be Reckoned With, a history of the WI. Holly very enthusiastically whistlestopped her way through the WI’s long history of campaigning – an element that brought me, too, to join as a member.
Our evening concluded with Committee members sharing their best memories since joining the WI – which included loving memories of our twins, Whitby WI, and fantastic stories which reminded us all of the distinct advantages of wearing corsets!
